What is OKBDC?
In 1974, a group of building designers from across the state of Oklahoma met in Tulsa to determine the interest in establishing an organization to promote and develop the profession of Building Design within the State. The result was that the Oklahoma Institute of Building Design (OIBD) was organized with the primary goals of contributing to the understanding of the profession and maintaining high standards for membership and certification of Building Designers.
By 1981 the Oklahoma Institute of Building Design realized that to adequately address the advancement of the profession of Building Design it was prudent to become a part of a national movement. The OIBD then joined the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) in the effort to provide credibility and accountability for Building Designers nationwide.
By the early 1990s the National Council of Building Designer Certification (NCBDC) was established as a testing and certification organization for Building Designers. Upon successful completion of all portions of the NCBDC exam, the designer may be granted the privilege of using the title Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD). A Continuing Education Credit policy established NCBDC’S requirements for ongoing education.
After AIBD reorganized their membership structure in 2015, Oklahoma designers once again established a support group specific to Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Building Designers Corporation (OKBDC), to continue to enhance the professionalism and knowledge of Building Designers within the State of Oklahoma.
